7,500 packs of smuggled cigarettes, confiscated at the northern border of Romania

Romanian border policemen from the Territorial Inspectorate of the Sighetu Marmației Border Police discovered and confiscated, following an action launched at the northern border of the country, 7,500 packs of cigarettes from non-EU origin.

The border police officers from the Sarasău Border Police Sector, Maramureș County, carried out an action in the area of ​​responsibility, on the line of combating cigarette smuggling.

Border guards noticed, in the direction of Remeți, a group of six people who crossed the Tisza River from Ukraine to Romania. Those in question were carrying several bulky packages back to the interior of the country.

Immediately, the border guards acted to apprehend them, carrying out legal summonses by voice, but the people did not stop, abandoned the packages and crossed the Tisza River back to Ukraine.

As soon as possible, the Ukrainian authorities were informed about the case, in order to jointly investigate the event.

Eight packs of cigarettes from duty free shops in Ukraine were found on the spot, containing 7,500 packs of cigarettes, worth about 88,000 lei.

Further investigations are being carried out into the offenses of smuggling and fraudulent crossing of the state border, as well as to the detection of persons involved in criminal activity and to prosecute them.
