Border Guards Chasing Smugglers Loading Cigarettes Thrown From a Train

Officers of the Pagėgiai team of the Pagėgiai Border Guard Team of the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) and the Pagėgiai team of the Special Purpose Division of the SBGS together with the employees of the Security and Risk Management Department of AB Lietuvos Geležinkeliai checked preliminary information about illegal cargo.

After going to Zabieliškis forest, located in Kėdainiai district, the SBGS officials noticed near the railway tracks that packages were being thrown from a passing train. This freight train was traveling from Belarus and had to reach Klaipeda.

Three people next to the railway carried the dumped cargo to the Audi A6 in Lithuanian numbers. Seeing the approaching officers, the loaders jumped into the Audi A6 and crashed at high speed.

Border guards began to chase them, and a forced stop lane, the so-called “hedgehog”, was used to stop the fugitive car. The Audi A6 was soon spotted in a nearby forest, about 1.5 km from the railway. In it, SBGS officials found 6996 packets of Fest cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps. A police cynologist with a dog was used to search for the fugitives, but to no avail.

SBGS officials found another 5,500 pack of Fest cigarettes near the railway tracks. A total of 12,496 packets of Fest cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps were found during the operation. The value of such cargo in Lithuania with taxes is about 38 thousand. euros.

A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the Pagėgiai border team regarding the illegal disposal of excisable goods.
