Fourteen foreign citizens discovered hiding in a truck transporting mineral wool

Romanian and Bulgarian border guards, within the framework of joint missions and based on risk analysis, stopped for inspection a freight truck registered in Estonia, which was transporting mineral wool on the Bulgaria-Hungary route. The vehicle was driven by a 33-year-old Lithuanian citizen.

Following the inspection, a specially arranged compartment was discovered in the semi-trailer of the truck, where fourteen people were hiding, without identity documents. They verbally declared that they were Syrian, Egyptian and Turkish citizens, aged between 15 and 47.

Given the issues found, the truck, the driver and the foreign citizens were taken over by the Bulgarian border authorities for further investigations and the application of the necessary legal measures.

After Romania’s full accession to the Schengen Area, the Border Police continues to act based on risk analyses to ensure the security of the country’s borders. Also, the competence in managing illegal migration remains at the national level, for an efficient management of this type of crime.
