Frontex-JRC cooperation to analyse emerging technologies in the field of border security

Frontex and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission have collaborated to identify and monitor existing and emerging technological solutions relevant for European Integrated Border Management. 

The results of the cooperation can be found in a recent JRC publication Weak Signals in Border Management and Surveillance Technologies.

The main objective of the analysis was to assess the challenges and opportunities of these technologies for addressing operational needs of the European Border and Coast Guard community and enhance the management of the external borders. 

Using the JRC’s Technology and Innovation Monitoring analytics capacity, eleven technologies were selected for the analysis due to their potential impact, including high altitude pseudo satellites, blockchain, IoT and underwater sensor networks.
