Humanitarian Aid from Ukraine, France and Norway Reaches Lithuania

The first 24 kilometres of concertina arrived from Ukraine on Friday. This is part of the aid Ukraine is sending to Lithuania, which is expected to send a total of 100 kilometres of this barbed wire for the installation of a physical barrier on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border.

“Lithuania is currently facing an organised hybrid aggression, which is not only against Lithuania but also against the European Union and its fundamental democratic values. Although illegal migration flows have now decreased, we need to build a protective barrier and reinforce the protection of our borders. We are grateful to Ukraine, which is providing us with assistance,” said Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė.

At the end of July, Lithuania received 105 kilometres of concertina from Estonia. In early August, work started on the construction of the concertina at the Druskininkai barrier.

16 European Union countries have already sent humanitarian aid to Lithuania, including tents, beds, generators, blankets, mattresses, etc.

Humanitarian aid from France also arrived in Lithuania on Thursday and from Norway on Friday. “We thank the European countries for their solidarity in the face of Lithuania’s irregular migration crisis. The essential items will allow us to ensure better accommodation conditions for migrants,” said Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė.

The aid received from France and Norway includes beds, tents, flooring for tents, food rations, hygiene kits and lighting kits. This assistance was delivered to the Border Guard School.

In addition to France and Luxembourg, 16 EU Member States have already sent humanitarian aid to Lithuania: Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Croatia, Finland, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Poland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Slovakia and Sweden.

More than 4,100 migrants have crossed the Lithuanian-Belarusian border illegally this year.
