Lithuanian border guards detained a group of nine illegal migrants who violated the border with Belarus

Border Guards detained 9 persons who had crossed the border illegally on the bank of the Kamoja River, in the Švenčionys district near Ramoniūnai village, near the border with Belarus. The border between the two states runs here on the Kamoja River.

According to preliminary data, the detainees are Iraqi citizens. All of them had this country’s passports without Schengen visas and applied for asylum in Lithuania.

The border guards who inspected the river bank soon identified the place where migrants crossed the state border illegally from Belarus to Lithuania.

This year, 273 illegal migrants, mostly Iraqi citizens, tried to enter Lithuania from Belarus. This figure is more than 3 times higher than it was throughout 2020.
