One To Watch – Human Smugglers Continue to Endanger the People they Exploit

U.S. Border Patrol agents manning the Farm to Market Road 1017 checkpoint encountered another dangerous case of human smuggling southeast of Hebbronville, Texas.

The incident occurred during the afternoon of October 3, when a pickup truck approached the checkpoint. During the immigration inspection of the driver and front seat passenger, a Service canine alerted agents to the rear of the pickup. The vehicle was referred to secondary inspection, where a compartment was found in the cargo bed area of the vehicle. Upon opening the compartment, agents discovered two individuals hidden inside. The temperature inside the compartment was recorded as being 124 degrees Fahrenheit. The two men were medically evaluated, but were not in need of medical attention. They were determined to be illegally in the United States from the countries of Mexico and El Salvador. They were placed under arrest, along with the driver and front seat passenger pending further investigation. The vehicle was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol.

This is another example of the heartless nature in which human smugglers treat the people they exploit for profit. The method by which these people were being transported shows a total lack of regard for the welfare of human beings. Additionally, by placing them in the cramped space without personal protective equipment further endangered them and our communities to the risk of COVID-19 infection.
