The Spanish Civil Guard arrests two men for jihadist terrorism in two operations
The international terrorism specialists of the Spanish Civil Guard have carried out two actions in the field of the fight against terrorism at the beginning of this year 2025.
On the one hand, an individual has been arrested for jihadism in the province of Valencia. This person had been immersed in a deep process of radicalisation for several years with consumption of jihadist web content disseminated by the terrorist organisation Daesh. Much of this content was on platforms recently removed from the online space following an international operation also led by the Civil Guard.
Constant access to terrorist narratives through propaganda poses a risk, not only because it is ideal for the self-education of the individual who consumes it and can lead to violent actions, but also because of the extent of radicalization that the jihadist can project onto his immediate surroundings.
These actions have been carried out under the direction of the Central Court of Instruction No. 1 and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court. After being brought before the court, his imprisonment has been ordered.
On the other hand, the return of individuals who have joined terrorist groups such as Daesh or Al Qaeda since the Syrian conflict in 2011, the so-called foreign terrorist fighters, is considered a serious risk to national security, derived from the training in the use of weapons and explosives that the displaced combatants acquire there.
The Civil Guard is therefore working to detect these returnees using its comprehensive capabilities, which include surveillance at the country’s entry and exit points.
As a result, a Tunisian returnee was arrested in Ceuta when he tried to enter Spanish territory illegally. The investigation revealed that this person travelled to Syria in 2016 in order to join a terrorist organisation. After completing the proceedings, in coordination with the Central Group for Expulsions of the National Police, he was expelled to his country of origin.
