Undeclared over 3.5 million Swedish kroner in the caches of a car were discovered by the Bulgarian customs officials

Undeclared currency worth over BGN 635,000 was discovered by customs officers from the “Customs Mobile Groups” department during an inspection of a car leaving the country.

On 11/19/2022, a “Peugeot” car with Swedish registration arrived at Kapitan Andreevo BCP. The driver, a Swedish citizen, who traveled alone from the Kingdom of Sweden through Bulgaria to Turkey, declared to the customs officials that he was not carrying goods, currency or cash to declare. According to the “risk analysis” method, the car was selected for a thorough customs inspection, during which wads of Swedish kroner of different denominations were found in factory cavities in the luggage compartment. The total amount of discovered undeclared currency is 3,566,890 Swedish kroner with the BGN equivalent of 635,327 BGN.

In this case, a fast-track proceeding was initiated by an investigative customs inspector under the supervision of the District Prosecutor’s Office Haskovo-Territorial Department – Svilengrad. The driver with the initials M.A. has been brought as a defendant for not having fulfilled his obligation to declare in writing to the customs authorities the currency transferred across the border, which is external to the European Union and the value of the money is particularly large. The crime is classified under Article 251, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code
